{"id":5654,"date":"2025-01-09T04:19:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T11:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embracinghome.blog\/?p=5654"},"modified":"2025-01-07T14:27:29","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T21:27:29","slug":"new-year-same-old-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embracinghome.blog\/index.php\/2025\/01\/09\/new-year-same-old-me\/","title":{"rendered":"New Year, Same Old Me"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The calendar change does not require an upending of my life, just encouragement to make small adjustments.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday I sat in my quiet kitchen with gingerbread toast, a mug of English tea, and listened to a podcast that reminded me of a few of my foundational truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;I want us all to have the foundational perspective that who you are today is perfectly lovely. You don&#8217;t have to change who you are under this \u2018New Year, New You\u2019 mindset in order to matter.&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/6mrY7M4AQjI2XTaMQkdMt0?si=WDGOfErvTTm06Mh1uDtfPA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kendra Adachi<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We are bombarded by messages this time of year to make radical changes to who we are and what our lives look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Just because that\u2019s the messaging we are surrounded by does not mean we must blindly follow and uproot what is working.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am a big believer in making changes when life feels off or doesn\u2019t fit our current season. It is pushed upon us by others with selfish intentions, not compassion for our needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our economically driven society does not want us to be content or feel settled. <em>That would reduce our spending.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/6mrY7M4AQjI2XTaMQkdMt0?si=WDGOfErvTTm06Mh1uDtfPA\">Kendra Adachi<\/a>\u2019s podcast, she reminded me where this drive for new planners and new diets comes from. The culture of consumerism colors how we make decisions and how we evaluate our \u201cprogress\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is why I believe reflection is such a powerful process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clarity comes when we take a few minutes to honestly ask ourselves specific questions. She shows the nesting dolls of influence that silently insulate our lives and impact our daily decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So how do we break free from the patterns set by consumerism and overwhelm?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refection is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By taking a moment to slow down and answer some simple questions in a journal, or talk-text a note into my phone, I find the way forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What am I working towards? Why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How am I doing in ________?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(my relationships, career, parenting, skills learned)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do I feel about my home? Why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What needs to change?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Each moment I spend in reflection brings new solutions to mind. It\u2019s not about finding a perfect formula or plan\u2014because one doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I embrace honesty about where I am, what impacts me right now, and how I can move toward living a life that matches what I care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>these will help you if reflection does not feel natural:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/feeling-like-a-weirdo-journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feeling Like a Weirdo &#8211; Journaling in Public<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/feeling-like-a-weirdo-journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/podcast-ep-005-journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Podcast Ep. #005 &#8211; Journaling<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/podcast-ep-005-journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to overhaul your life to make the new year meaningful.
