Because I was purchasing the book I was allowed to write, highlight, and add tabs at will. This gave me a new excitement to working through the material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in my 20\u2019s I found that underlining non-fiction put my personal growth journey on a faster trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I thrive when I have the ability to interact with information given to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me this looks like: summarizing in notes, using tabs for interesting info, underlining powerful statements, and bracketing key paragraphs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lately I have also been annotating fiction novels and book club reads I am enjoying. I often find phrases that are meaningful to me or well written description that I want to note. I do not have anything color coded or specific to a type of annotation. I just grab a sticky tab and add it to the page near my underlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I try not to overthink it. \ud83d\ude1c<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Annotating Tips &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark up what matters to you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annotating is a way to talk back to the book and have a fun conversation with it. This is about noticing what grabs your attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to Look For:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ideas that make you stop and think<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quotes you want to remember<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Words\/phrases that spark something<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A-ha moments or clear explanations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Questions that pop up as you read<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Add a sticky tab when:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You think \u201cthis could help me later\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You find a key idea or powerful truth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt; <strong>Let your notes reflect your curiosity, your values &amp; what you care about most.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>In my annotating kits I included:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mrpen.com\/collections\/highlighters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aesthetic highlighters<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a pen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sticky tabs (<a href=\"https:\/\/mrpen.com\/collections\/paper-sticky-notes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with fun color pallets like these<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>book marks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reading tracker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>my annotating pencil pouch at home also includes:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ticonderoga #2 pencils (they smell so good)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a variety of pens with different ink colors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sticky notes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(all of the above list as well)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!q0u_!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Febd6f8f0-53c2-433e-95c3-643406e8f167_3974x2684.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!q0u_!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Febd6f8f0-53c2-433e-95c3-643406e8f167_3974x2684.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Journaling &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This practice has been a key for me throughout my life. I have written about it many times before. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/pub\/embracinghome\/p\/feeling-like-a-weirdo-journaling?r=1qjcbv&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;showWelcomeOnShare=false\">check out this post<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I overthink journaling I find that I get frustrated and feel weighed down by it. But it has the power to be magically transformative when I just show up to the blank page without expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Letting my journaling time flow naturally means letting go of the finished result. <strong>I just embrace where I am and how I am doing in that moment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes it is a bit scrapbooky with collected papers glued in and stickers added. At other times it is words only with emotional processing and ranting. <strong>Both are good and helpful to me. <\/strong>They are an honest reflection of where I am at that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I do not try to categorize, organize, or sort the contents of my journals. I simply turn to the next blank page, write the date and then do what feels right that day. My supplies used often reflect where I am and how much time I have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Journaling Tips &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Journaling doesn\u2019t have to be tidy or deep. It is your invitation to pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to Write About:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s on your mind right now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are you feeling but haven\u2019t said yet?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are you learning lately?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A quote or idea you don\u2019t want to forget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A memory that surfaced today<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Something beautiful you noticed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ideas to Try:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brain dump: Empty your head onto the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One-sentence journal: Just a few words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;What if&#8221; questions: Write out some wild ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There\u2019s no wrong way to journal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spelling and grammar don\u2019t matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doodle, add stickers, paste in receipts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think, wonder, reflect, and be fully yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>In the journaling kits I added:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>scrapbooking paper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stickers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a pen and highlighter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sticky notes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>book marks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a thin \u201cstarter journal\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In my at home journaling basket I also have:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>glue sticks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a variety of markers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>my favorite pens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collected receipts, maps, and labels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>my favorite sticker books (Happy Planner stickers are the next level!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aesthetic sticky notes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img\" forgotten).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You can do this!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Keep it simple.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Be in the moment.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Underline to show what grabbed your attention.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Honesty creates the best moments of reflection.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Let your annotated books and your journals show the actual life you live and not a polished version of yourself.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3
