Sometimes with careful planning and at other times more loosely gathered materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m thrilled to discover there\u2019s a whole movement and community behind being intellectually alive and taking charge of personal growth. I had some extra time on a weekend away and really enjoyed reading and Commonplacing my notes on this one. I have read most of Acuff\u2019s books and trust his perspective. {<em>His audiobooks are hilariously read by him and contain a ton of extra thoughts and ideas. <\/em>}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/brenebrown.com\/book\/atlas-of-the-heart\/\"><strong>Atlas of the Heart<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 I did not get to spend time on this in September, but this month I\u2019ve started reading (also enjoying <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/brenebrown.com\/podcast-show\/unlocking-us\/\">the podcast with Bren\u00e9 Brown<\/a>) and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/pub\/embracinghome\/p\/my-commonplace-notes-on-learning?r=1qjcbv&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;showWelcomeOnShare=false\">Commonplacing all my notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wayofthewildflowerbook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Way of the Wildflower<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>by<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ruthchousimons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ruth Chou Simons<\/strong><\/a>\u2014 This book has been such a calming read lately. She writes about living like the wildflowers (rooted, trusting, and unhurried) and her paintings make every page beautiful. It\u2019s the kind of book that helps me unwind at night and remember to move through my days with a little more peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Art Appreciation <\/strong>\u2014 books and stuff from my shelves in the schoolroom to ponder and read slowly, just for me<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>masterpiece collection books:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/6mejS9Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Europe\u2019s Top 100 Masterpieces<\/strong>: Art for the Traveler by Rick Steves<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/usborne.com\/us\/quicklinks\/quicklink\/the-usborne-introduction-to-art-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Usborne Introduction To Art<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; with The National Gallery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/simplycharlottemason.com\/store\/product-category\/product-art-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my favorite picture study resource<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I also found <a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/eDAoX0Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cheap postcard prints on Amazon<\/a> to leaf through and maybe send a few in the mail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.suleikajaouad.com\/the-book-of-alchemy\"><strong>The Book of Alchemy<\/strong><\/a>(for Creative Recovery &amp; Morning Pages) \u2014 I got this book as a celebration gift for myself for working through a large piece of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/juliacameronlive.com\/books-by-julia\/\">The Artist\u2019s Way<\/a> as well as my reviewing previous notes. {<em>I found so much creative gold in there! It inspired several new projects that I am excited to share with you all soon!!<\/em> }<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Fiction that I am excited about<\/em><\/strong><em>:<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/series\/F6N\/impossible-creatures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Impossible Creatures<\/strong><\/a> (book 1) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/series\/F6N\/impossible-creatures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Poisoned King<\/strong><\/a> (book 2) by Katherine Rundell \u2014 My 10-year-old loved these books and so I plan to read them so we can discuss the characters and themes in more detail. He told me that since I just read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebeccarossauthor.com\/a-river-enchanted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">books about a magical island<\/a> these would be a perfect next read. {<em>Who can say no to that excellent sales pitch? <\/em>}<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I will also likely add a few audiobooks that are fall romance rom-com themed. I\u2019m not sure what those titles will be yet, last year I read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelauriegilmore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laurie Gilmore<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelauriegilmore.com\/books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Cinnamon Bun Book Store<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelauriegilmore.com\/books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Pumpkin Spice Caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> \ud83c\udf83\ud83c\udf42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Movies to watch:<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our homeschool US History lessons we are moving into the 1950\u2019s. So Jim and I plan to enjoy watching classic movies set in that time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am specifically excited about the ones that feel like the fall season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>October Sky<\/strong> &#8211; set in October 1957, news of the Soviet Union\u2018s launch of Sputnik 1 reaches Homer Hickam in the mining community in West Virginia. Homer is inspired to build his own rockets despite the skepticism of his friends and family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mona Lisa Smile <\/strong>&#8211; set in 1953, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts) accepts an Art History teaching position at Wellesley College. She introduces modern art and encourages discussion about what art is. Katherine also challenges her students to achieve more in life than what society is expecting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dead Poets Society<\/strong> &#8211; set in 1959 at a fictional elite boarding school called Welton Academy. It tells the story of an English teacher (Robin Williams) who inspires his students through his unique teaching of poetry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">{<em>I like adding to my own personal learning with this form of visual story telling. It\u2019s filled with solutions but also encouragement and understanding. Each chapter has reflection prompts and easy action steps. How much I love writing with a pen in a notebook just for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/maggiesmithpoet.com\/book\/dear-writer\/\">Dear Writer by Maggie Smith<\/a> was so healing and wonderful. I am not a poet but I applied her creative exercises to my non-fiction writing work and it was awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was also surprised at what I found in my Artists Way notebook from several years ago. Lists of fears and things I would love to do that I can now say I have done and no longer feel intimidated by. {<em>yay, progress!! <\/em>}<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also was calming for my mind to be mostly away from social media and the constant input of online material. When the urge to scroll hit me I would go to my basket and choose something to work on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I do have one confession to make\u2026 I didn\u2019t do much with sketching and watercolor. \ud83e\udee5 I carried the supplies with me in my bag multiple places but the mood never quite hit me. I\u2019ll admit I can still be intimidated by the mess and I don\u2019t want to paint with others around me looking over my shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall I am very happy with what I spent time on and the progress I made.
