Reading is an act of quiet resistance against hustle culture.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have childhood memories of running home from elementary school excited to read my new library book until my parents got home from work. (Yes, I was an 80\u2019s latchkey kid.\ud83d\ude1c)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would toss my backpack in my room, grab some crackers from the pantry, and sit outside under the backyard tree or lounge upside down on the couch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A book and a quiet house felt healing for my soul. Jim would leave for work and I would have long days stretched out with not much structure. After feeling a bit unanchored, I decided to pick up a book I had always loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While nursing, and when the baby was fussy, I would read Anne of Green Gables aloud. Or weighed down by guilt over all the things I \u201cshould\u201d be doing instead. I paid more attention to the standards set by other people (who had many opinions about what my mothering life should look like).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was overwhelmed by comparison instead of listening to my inner voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet I was still a reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I kept collecting ideas and taking in words, just in scattered, distracted ways. Often I would allow myself to read parenting or Christian self-help books because those would make me a \u201cbetter person\u201d. It was a project, not for fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But fiction felt elusive and out of reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I longed for that feeling of being fully absorbed in a novel with depth and well-written characters, but it always seemed too difficult to make time for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>So how did I move from frustration to ending each day with a book in my hands?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a class=\"image-link image2 is-viewable-img\" href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!rUXA!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4b24f4af-b275-4bde-875a-087ffa75f3c4_640x427.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!rUXA!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4b24f4af-b275-4bde-875a-087ffa75f3c4_640x427.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@anniespratt?utm_content=creditCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=unsplash\">Annie Spratt<\/a> on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/a-person-laying-in-bed-reading-a-book-W5AObJgDNug?utm_content=creditCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=unsplash\">Unsplash<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Things That I Changed:<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 \u2013&nbsp;<strong><em>My attitude and my sense of identity.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I have decided to accept my identity: <strong>I am a reader.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I am someone who enjoys reading.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I \u201cget to\u201d read every night.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My day is not complete without some time spent in a book.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading is necessary to me as brushing my teeth and wearing clothes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a basic element of my day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 \u2013&nbsp;<strong><em>My communication with others.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I tell my kids, \u201cI am not available right now, I am reading\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThis is important to me, please give me space.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cYou have all your needs met and now I am spending some time by myself.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I claim my spot on the couch even if that means I move a kid or a sleeping cat to have my spot. (Yes this takes training and, honestly, kids being older.)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the guilt statements come rushing in, I counter them with self-compassion and honesty. \u201cI am allowed to sit and read right now, I will do that stuff later.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I often keep a notepad nearby so when I think of To Do List tasks I can quickly write them down and then get back to my book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 \u2013&nbsp;<strong><em>My environment.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I take off my shoes and grab a couch blanket.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I get comfortable.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I turn on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B081TW57W1\/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my reading lamp<\/a> so I have good lighting no matter the time of day.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My phone gets set down in another room.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(If that strong temptation is sitting beside me I will not read, I will scroll.)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I get myself a fun treat and a hot tea or glass of water.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes I light candles on the coffee table or open a window to hear the birds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>These things are all small but they make strong statements:<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will be here for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReading matters to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis book is special and I am making a space for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>Let\u2019s start a little reading revival. Share with a friend who needs that nudge too.<\/em><br><a href=\"%%share_url%%\">Share<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can choose to make space for this beautiful practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you read, how you choose to read, where, and when will all be unique to you. It will also change with your schedule and the season. And that is okay. Some seasons you\u2019ll finish a stack of books, and other times you\u2019ll be proud just to read a few pages before bed. Both count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t need to feel guilty for what you <em>aren\u2019t<\/em> reading or compare yourself to people who seem to fly through books every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your reading life is yours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal isn\u2019t to check boxes or keep up. The goal is to come home to that part of you that loves words, stories, and ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we make a little space for reading, we make space for rest, imagination, and inspiration. We can gather new ideas, visit faraway places, experience new things, and hear from the voices of others within the pages of a good book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let\u2019s keep showing up for our books, even in tiny ways.
