This month is so full of potential (and sometimes disappointment). There have been years in the past when I been in the different January extremes. I have felt overwhelmed by grief, or plowed over by the insanity of the overly full Christmas season, or hopeful and ready to embrace the newness and fresh opportunities that feel tangible this time of year (never all in the same year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, I am ready to steadily move forward with a calm rhythm of balance. My days are filled with homemaking, teaching, parenting, volunteer work, writing, and caring for my teens and adult kids. My daughter\u2019s May wedding will bring some extra activity to our already busy spring semester schedule (<em>check out <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/december-recap-and-christmas-reflections?r=1qjcbv\"><em>my December recap post<\/em><\/a><em> to see the engagement photos!<\/em>\ud83d\udc8d\ud83e\ude75).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the midst of my busy days, my personal curriculum basket anchors me in reading and activities that I enjoy and find delight in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My learning plans remind me to absorb stories in novels, ponder well written ideas in non-fiction, and write excellent notes in my Commonplace notebook that inspire my own writing. I need to get out and enjoy it with my family in a way that matches our current definition of fun and leisure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making more <strong>sourdough breads &amp; pancakes<\/strong> \u2014 My focus in December was mostly Christmas cookies and goodies, so I want to get back to the meal basics that we love. I will, of course, be using <a href=\"https:\/\/homesteadliving.com\/daily-sourdough\/?utm_source=authors&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=lisa-bass&amp;utm_term=SRD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Everyday Sourdough by Lisa Bass<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More <a href=\"https:\/\/mark-s-school104.teachable.com\/l\/pdp\/how-to-build-a-personal-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>discussions about Personal Curriculum<\/strong><\/a> and a few practical tips shared from <a href=\"https:\/\/mark-s-school104.teachable.com\/l\/pdp\/how-to-build-a-personal-curriculum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my online course<\/a> \u2014 I\u2019m thrilled to share this resource that I have created in a way that feels authentic to me and my work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caring for my houseplants and dusting bookshelves in my home<\/strong> \u2014 I don\u2019t plan to deep clean the whole house, but some light maintenance and care are needed in some areas of my home. I especially noticed this when putting away Christmas decor.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This week I\u2019m also helping my kids declutter and rearrange their bedrooms.\ud83d\ude33 Healthy life-skills that take a tremendous energy to teach.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cozy candles, soft woven blankets, and mugs of tea<\/strong> \u2014 Still thinking about the cozy factor even as I put away the Christmas decor. I bought candles called \u201cVanilla Bean\u201d and another called \u201cBook Club\u201d. They will be a nice addition to my evening downtime. Also, I have added a decaf mug of tea or hot coco to my evening reading routine on days when I am feeling cold. It is so calming and relaxing! \ud83c\udf75\ud83d\udecb\ufe0f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watercolor or sketching?<\/strong> \u2014 I\u2019m not sure if I will have the inspiration or time but I would like to get back into making artistic things for myself and watercolor is one of my favorite ways to do that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bullet Journaling<\/strong> \u2014 I am excitedly setting up my new Bujo for 2026! I have found that using analog tools for my weekly review helps me think clearly about the week ahead. My blank bujo pages give me just the right amount of structure to write what is needed for that week and make lists for other random planning that pops up.<ul><li>[\ud83e\udd13\ud83d\udcd3<em>planner nerd moment\u2026<\/em>] I just finished my \u201cmustard yellow\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/scribblesthatmatter.com\/products\/dotted-journal-pro?variant=42136311759024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scribbles That Matter (B5 \/ 160 gsm)<\/a>. My new one is a <a href=\"https:\/\/scribblesthatmatter.com\/products\/dotted-journal-pro?variant=42136311726256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B5 \u201cbottle green\u201d with 120 gsm<\/a>. I like that the 120 gsm has more pages (213 pages vs. 151) and I didn\u2019t use thick marker as much as I thought I would. I am so excited to open to those fresh new pages and get it started!!<\/li><\/ul>\u201cBullet Journaling keeps me on track for my week and helps me keep information out of my head. I can approach my week calmer and react to unexpected situations with speed. So cozy and I love all the books.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>So, what\u2019s in my basket?<\/em><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Non-Fiction:<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/mistakes-were-made-but-not-by-me-third-edition-why-we-justify-foolish-beliefs-bad-decisions-and-hurtful-acts-carol-tavris\/507560a2efd55431?ean=9780358329619&amp;next=t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me!)<\/strong> <\/a>by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson \ud83d\udcd6&amp; \ud83c\udfa7\u2014 this book was referenced in <a href=\"https:\/\/brenebrown.com\/book\/atlas-of-the-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlas of the Heart<\/a> as THE book for understanding cognitive dissonance. This book is full of powerful stories and detailed examples of self-justification: how it works, the damage it can cause, and how we can overcome it. I\u2019m a ways into this book and it has been a difficult but good read so far. By difficult, I mean not in comprehension, but emotionally. It has shown me some very ugly sides of myself and some blind spots that I could not see before. Things I thought only \u201cother people\u201d did. \ud83e\udee5\u201cWhen we make mistakes, cling to outdated attitudes, or mistreat other people, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth.\u201d &#8211; Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicingtheway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Practicing The Way <\/strong>by John Mark Comer<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 In 2024 I preordered this book, started reading, liked it, but then DNF-ed. The timing didn\u2019t match with my mood or other reading topics. But now I think its the right time for me to interact with it\u2019s ideas and the other amazing content available. ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicingtheway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>https:\/\/www.practicingtheway.org\/<\/em><\/a> )I have a whole shelf section in my office dedicated to John Mark Comer\u2019s books. [<a href=\"https:\/\/johnmarkcomer.com\/#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry<\/strong><\/a> absolutely changed my life and my perspective on productivity.] I am sure that I will be sharing more as I get farther into the reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/creativepennbooks.com\/en-us\/collections\/paperbacks\/products\/the-healthy-writer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Healthy Writer<\/strong> by Joanna Penn and Dr Euan Lawson<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 I really enjoy Penn\u2019s non-fiction writing series. Her books have been incredibly helpful over the past few years. (Especially when writing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Subtle-Resistance-Practical-Deliberately-Overwhelm\/dp\/B0F8YNRLQS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my book: Subtle Resistance<\/a>.) I am looking forward to once again applying her wisdom to my writing life and revamping my routines and overall author health. I want to be writing for a long time and this seems like a good time of year for a bit of a refresh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bethkempton.com\/wabisabi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Wabi Sabi <\/strong>by Beth Kempton<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\/\ud83c\udfa7\u2014 I had one of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beth Kempton<\/a>\u2019s books in December reads and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NiamhCeleste<\/a> suggested in the comments this one for my January stack. I think I read it years ago, but it definitely needs a re-read! I haven\u2019t decided yet if I will read the hardcover or just listen on audio. One of the book descriptions says: \u201cWabi Sabi will teach you find more joy and inspiration throughout your perfectly imperfect life.\u201d Umm.. yes please!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingcriticalthinkers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Raising Critical Thinkers<\/strong> by Julie Bogart<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 I have followed <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julie Bogart<\/a> on various platforms and her podcast for years. Her insight into parenting and homeschooling has been affirming and supportive. This book will be a kind companion as we get back into our school work and tackle the spring semester. I plan to read one at a time and pick up the next one that fits my mood at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferlynnbarnes.com\/inheritancegames.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Inheritance Games<\/strong> by Jennifer Lynn Barnes<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 This YA novel came highly recommended by a friend and so I bought the series for Lara and I to enjoy. I\u2019ve finished half of it already and I will probably read book 2: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferlynnbarnes.com\/inheritancegames.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Hawthorne Legacy<\/strong><\/a>\ud83d\udcd6 and book 3: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferlynnbarnes.com\/inheritancegames.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Final Gambit<\/strong><\/a>\ud83d\udcd6 this month as well. I have been mildly annoyed at the YA-ness of this book (like the main character\u2019s friend using fake cusswords), but overall I am enjoying the story and solving the mystery inheritance issues. The wealthy family the FMC is thrust into has similarities to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81426967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My Life With The Walter Boys<\/a>. I\u2019m still not sure if she will have a romantic connection with one of the brothers. It\u2019s definitely going to make for some fun discussions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/eight-cousins-louisa-may-alcott\/1100450408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Aunt Hill<\/strong> by Louisa May Alcott<\/a> \ud83c\udfa7 (Also called Eight Cousins) \u2014 another YA easy read. I really enjoyed reading <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/jane-of-lantern-hill-l-m-montgomery\/d571dee7e0a2f810?ean=9781402289309&amp;next=t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jane of Lantern Hill<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/my-november-personal-curriculum-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">November <\/a>so I wanted to add in another L.M. Montgomery novel. When I was writing down my TBR list in my book planner, I realized I already have it on Audible. I\u2019m looking forward to listening to it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/the-book-club-hotel-sarah-morgan\/1142912865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Book Club Hotel<\/strong> by Sarah Morgan<\/a> \ud83c\udfa7\u2014 I listened to this at the very end of December and early January while cleaning and organizing the house. It was very winter themed wrapping up at Christmas time. (low spice factor: There were several romance relationships but it was tame and behind closed doors.)The POV switches each chapter which is done well and I enjoyed seeing the different perspectives of the story. Hattie Coleman (the main character who runs the Inn) and lifelong friends Erica, Anna, and Claudia are likeable, flawed, and real. I found myself especially relating to Anna. Each of them are going through some major changes and feel stuck until they realize that they can help each other in unique ways. If I listed the tropes it would sound cheesy but it didn\u2019t feel that way at all. It felt grounded and each character was well rounded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A Man Called Ove<\/strong> by Fredrik Backman \ud83d\udcd6\/\ud83c\udfa5\u2014 This was recommended by the <a href=\"https:\/\/modernmissmason.substack.com\/s\/all-booked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online book club<\/a> I\u2019m a part of. The genres are humorous fiction, contemporary fiction, and character study. It became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a Swedish film and the American film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7405458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks<\/a>. I found the paperback in a discount bin and if I don\u2019t end up having time to read it, I will just give myself a pass and watch the movie. I like that it has a MC with strict routines and curmudgeonly exterior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebeccarossauthor.com\/wild-reverence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Wild Reverence<\/strong> by Rebecca Ross<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 This is her newest book and it\u2019s described as a sweeping, beautiful adult novel filled with tension, romance, and dark secrets. (I got the special hardcover edition with dark teal edges and cover art.\ud83d\ude01) I\u2019m excited to have this romance novel on my list and I\u2019m looking forward to diving back into the world of the gods first introduced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebeccarossauthor.com\/bibliography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Divine Rivals<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> I am not much of a fantasy reader but the books Ross writes are guiding me into the genre with excitement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I am hoping I can read all of these this month but we will see. As I have said before, <strong>I am holding these plans loosely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is anything I don\u2019t get to this month, I can roll it into next month\u2019s planning or put it on the shelf for another time.
