The typewriter and plants. The shelves. Is this your office?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The whole exchange caught me off guard. It had started as small talk, a simple dinner conversation. \u201cSo you\u2019re Scott\u2019s mom, what do you do?\u201d We chatted back and forth during dinner while the college students at the other table began an animated debate about something sports-related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of writing do you do?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHave you ever read <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jamesclear.com\/atomic-habits\"><strong>Atomic Habits<\/strong> by James Clear<\/a>?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation shifted as I discovered his excitement for reading non-fiction. I shared that I wrote a practical non-fiction book about living deliberately and avoiding overwhelm. [ <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/dVIFw6i\"><strong>Subtle Resistance<\/strong><\/a> ]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was all it took.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly we were swapping favorite non-fiction book titles and talking about learning. Before I knew it, a few of us were standing in my office, scanning the shelves, pulling books down, and they were asking how I keep track of it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I explained how I plan my learning without rigid goals. I showed them my Personal Curriculum basket and my many notebooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I shared, I realized this is exactly what my readers are curious about too. Not the polished version, but the real one. This is the part people don\u2019t usually get to see online. The behind-the-scenes, low-pressure version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m firmly anti-gatekeeping, especially when it comes to learning. After taking a much needed winter break, it will be good to get back into my afternoon writing routine again. I\u2019m hoping the creative bug hits and I get inspired for some posts that will be helpful but fun to read. \ud83d\ude01<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reading books from my shelves<\/strong> \u2014 I seriously need to read what I already own instead of bookstore shopping or browsing Amazon. So this month I will keep my physical book stash to what I have waiting to be read (plus some audiobooks on Libby).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hospitality<\/strong> \u2014 Another theme for my February. I have several parties and events I will be cooking for and hosting in my home this month. I want to be intentional about the meal planning, shopping, prep, and event details. {Hopefully without stressing out or getting totally overwhelmed.\ud83e\udd1e}<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>My Commonplace Notes and morning Bible Study<\/strong> \u2014 These are giving me fresh energy lately. I hope to continue these practices in the midst of my full schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Long walks in the neighborhood<\/strong> \u2014 This is the daily afternoon routine that the kids, dogs, and I look forward to. The Arizona desert is perfect right now! I would love to add more to this goal, but I\u2019m going to keep it realistic and simple. \ud83c\udfdc\ufe0f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bullet Journaling, my many lists, and our family digital calendar<\/strong> are holding me together right now. I think it will support my hospitality goals and be a fun continuation of curating my home. Lee has a background in Industrial Design and I\u2019ve seen her book recommended several times. I\u2019m excited about this one!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alisonwoodbrooks.com\/conversation-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>TALK: The science of conversation and the art of being ourselves <\/strong>by Alison Wood Brooks<\/a> \ud83c\udfa7\u2014 I picked this audiobook because good conversation sounds simple, but it rarely feels that way in real life. This book looks at conversation as something we can actually practice and improve, without turning it into a performance. I\u2019m excited to read it during a very social month because I want to be more present, more curious, and less in my head. My hope is that it helps me make small shifts that lead to warmer connections and fewer late-night mental replays. \ud83d\udcac<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m also still Commonplacing and finishing reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicingtheway.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Practicing The Way <\/strong>by John Mark Comer<\/a> (more on that in <a href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/pub\/embracinghome\/p\/my-january-recap?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&amp;utm_medium=web\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my January recap post<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I could try to plan out some more non-fiction but I\u2019m not sure I will have time or space to read them this month. So, I will choose to be kind to myself and keep expectations low. She said to watch the movie: <strong>Austenland\ud83c\udfa5 <\/strong>(2013) with Jennifer Coolidge, then read book 2 of the series.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The movie <strong>Austenland\ud83c\udfa5 <\/strong>is about Jane, a New Yorker who receives a trip to a Jane Austen-themed resort in England where guests role-play in the Regency era. I loved it! So quotable and fun to watch!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 2nd book: <strong>Midnight in Austenland<\/strong>\ud83d\udcd6 is a follow-up novel but with a new main character. Charlotte encounters mysterious events, including a potential dead body, forcing her to question what&#8217;s real and what&#8217;s part of the performance.<a href=\"https:\/\/substackcdn.com\/image\/fetch\/$s_!sQCk!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep\/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F978c57fc-ec9d-4c25-b1b0-582920111db7_498x280.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/726207\/jane-and-the-final-mystery-by-stephanie-barron\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Jane and the Final Mystery<\/strong> by Stephanie Barron<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 Going along with the same theme of Jane Austen lore this mystery will be a fun read. This book is at the end of her series so hopefully that won\u2019t be frustrating for me, but I already have it on my shelf so I didn\u2019t want to switch to the first book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/aH4bB47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Home<\/strong> by Marilynne Robinson<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\ud83c\udfa7\u2014 reading and discussing the second half in <a href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/users\/105038784-leah-boden?utm_source=mentions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leah Boden<\/a>\u2019s book club.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferlynnbarnes.com\/inheritancegames.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Final Gambit<\/strong><\/a>\ud83d\udcd6and <a href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/1a6wGUc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Brothers Hawthorne<\/strong><\/a>\ud83d\udcd6<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferlynnbarnes.com\/inheritancegames.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by Jennifer Lynn Barnes<\/a> \u2014 books 3 &amp; 4 from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferlynnbarnes.com\/inheritancegames.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Inheritance Games<\/strong><\/a>. I am completely sucked into this YA series and I have been enjoying discussing it with Lara as we co-read the series. It also made for good conversation with the friend to recommended the series.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lynnpainter.com\/the-do-over\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Do-Over<\/strong> by Lynn Painter<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6This is a YA rom-com about Emilie who relives a disastrous Valentine&#8217;s Day over and over again, stuck in a time loop where she discovers her boyfriend is cheating on her and her family is falling apart. Lara enjoyed reading it and when she described it to me I added it to my TBR and insisted we watch the movie: <strong>Groundhog Day\ud83c\udfa5<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lara also recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/lynnpainter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Fake Skating<\/strong> by Lynn Painter<\/a> \ud83d\udcd6\u2014 This is a YA, Romantic Comedy, Sports Romance. In the past, the bulk of my reading was nonfiction (specifically self-help).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting book recs from others, having great conversations about reading, and branching out into new genres has been fun for me.
