(Not necessarily a good thing\u2026 which is why I read books on communication.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a practical non-fiction writer my goal is to be clear, kind, helpful, and share ideas as a human in progress. These authors all have excellent material that will help you move forward in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alisonwoodbrooks.com\/conversation-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Talk<\/em><\/strong> by Allison Wood Brooks<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Loved the science and studies behind this book. This will help you navigate the many micro-challenges and opportunities you face in conversation: What should you talk about? When should you ask a question? What should you ask? When should I share something of myself? How can you make small talk less painful? It was so well researched and written in a fun approachable way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/charlesduhigg.com\/supercommunicators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Supercommunicators<\/em><\/strong> by Charles Duhigg<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excellently written, I enjoyed the variety of examples and scenarios. This book explores the psychology and neuroscience behind how we can all learn to be better communicators and make this world a better place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hsperson.com\/books\/7033-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>The Highly Effective Parent<\/em><\/strong> by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D.<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tools in this book have helped me reduce chaos around me so that I can be more present and listening. I am an HSP and that there\u2019s a lot of ways that my environment is overwhelming me that is stopping me from communicating. So once I realized that I could actually change some factors in my environment it made a huge difference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/theholdernessfamily.com\/book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Everybody Fights<\/em><\/strong>by Kim and Penn Holderness<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Living with other people always causes conflict. Disagreements are normal. They offer scripts for how to start, continue, and wrap up hard conversations. I don\u2019t typically read \u201cmarriage books\u201d but I loved this one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedratawwab.com\/books\/drama-free\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Drama Free<\/em><\/strong> by Nedra Glover Tawwab<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>So much of my communication is wrapped up in family relationships. Extended family (mine &amp; Jim\u2019s) and close family we see regularly. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nedra Glover Tawwab<\/a> addresses a variety of situations (and examples from her counseling practice) with solid solutions and healthy steps forward for all. Also her resources are amazing!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rejectiontherapy.com\/book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Rejection Proof<\/em><\/strong> by Jia Jiang<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This book was hilarious and felt like a wild ride. Jiang shares his \u201c100 Days of Rejection\u201d experiment, where he deliberately sought out rejection to overcome his fear. After reading this I have felt more impowered and brave in scenarios where rejection is possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamury.com\/the-power-of-a-positive-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>The Power of a Positive No<\/em><\/strong> by Willian Ury<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This book has met me and helped me through some really difficult seasons. If you need a guide to advocating for yourself or loved ones this is your next read. It\u2019s written with compassion and helpful tips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/mistakes-were-made-but-not-by-me-third-edition-carol-tavriselliot-aronson?variant=40825034276898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Mistakes Were Made (but not by me)<\/em><\/strong> by social psychologists Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The authors argue that when people make errors or act against their own moral standards, they experience \u201ccognitive dissonance\u201d. To manage this discomfort, the brain subconsciously creates narratives that justify actions and absolve the self of blame. This book was a difficult but good read. By difficult, I mean not in comprehension, but emotionally. It showed me some very ugly sides of myself and some blind spots that I could not see before. Things I thought only \u201cother people\u201d did. \ud83e\udee5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/annhandley.com\/everybodywrites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Everybody Writes<\/em><\/strong> by Ann Handley<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The \u201cGo-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content\u201d and I would completely agree with that! Short chapters, fun to read, and very easy to apply to all types of writing (even just an email).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaelefante.com\/art\/book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Raising Hell, Living Well<\/em><\/strong> by Jessica Elefante<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This book is the power of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Subtle-Resistance-Practical-Deliberately-Overwhelm\/dp\/B0F8YNRLQS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Subtle Resistance<\/a> at it\u2019s finest. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jessica Elefante<\/a> expands on what capitalism has done to create hidden influences in many levels of our lives. She does an excellent job at explaining why most of us deal with overwhelm and decision fatigue. \u201cWe live in a world that is under the influence. Our lives are being choreographed by forces that want something from us.\u201d \u2014<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jessica Elefante<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>*bonus book rec: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emilyley.com\/products\/grace-not-perfection-book?srsltid=AfmBOopPKSsPLqZQsPEE4Gw5v5NXzQMwSqbtTfyH70VT9UuDFe9DJxTX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><em>Grace, Not Perfection<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emily Ley<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This book was a helpful guide to me in the midst of burnout when I needed someone to say that striving for perfection in all areas of my life was not necessary.
