Today I am sharing tips specific to writing but these ideas can be applied to any form of creative work, new hobby, or side project. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The past seven years of writing have been a personal revival. Following my curiosity onto the page and building creative work that reaches beyond my home has been deeply life-giving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as a fragile little idea has grown into meaningful work, and along the way I have learned a few things that help creativity expand naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are a few things I\u2019ve learned that help my creative process flourish<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect the Baby Bird \u2014<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The rugged mountains were the backdrop of our desert campsite. My friend and I sat in camping chairs looking at the shadows play across the crevices of the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think I want to start a blog.\u201d I said feeling fragile in my moment of honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her eyes got wide and she immediately responded with excitement and support. We sat there talking about my crazy idea in detail. I showed her my notebook full of notes and lists of blog post title ideas. I wrote more as we talked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five pages later I no longer felt nervous. A fresh excitement and love of what I wanted to write about had taken over me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the beginning of my creative venture into writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision fatigue of starting something new and the mountain of skills I would need to learn felt intimidating, but having that kind support helped me get started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have found that when creative projects are new they are fragile like a baby bird. They must be carefully held, nurtured, given space to grow, and shared with only gentle encouragers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is okay to give new ideas shelter from others opinion\u2019s and criticism so they have space to grow and gain momentum. In fact, I think it is essential to the creative process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blue Sky Period \u2014<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

No matter what you are starting (a book, blog, podcast, YouTube channel, draft of a novel, or poetry notes) it is important to just gather ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early on in my writing work I listened to this podcast: B.J. Novak Interviewed by Tim Ferriss<\/a>. B.J. Novak (a writer for The Office) shared the creative process that happened in the writing room. What blew me away was how he described the Blue Sky Period.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe whole few weeks were \u2018What If\u2019\u2026 every idea is valid for a while. \u2026It was creatively important. To generate and not edit. \u2026The best ideas will fuel you past the problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I absolutely love this mindset of \u201canything goes\u201d, \u201cno bad ideas\u201d, \u201cwrite down all inspiration without plans to do anything with it\u201d. It is embracing abundance and allowing creativity off it\u2019s leash to be open and free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I find when capturing ideas it is most effective to use the least resistance possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
