That reading slump sadly lasted several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the many tools that has helped me redefine and make major progress in my reading life has been creating a solid DNF policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It quietly lives in the background helping me when a book doesn\u2019t quite fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was reminded of the many layers of why and how I choose to DNF a book when this Substack Note popped up in my feed =<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notes post by: <strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Books May Save Us<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFriends, please let me know if you DNF books that aren\u2019t engaging you or do you fight through even if it\u2019s a slog? Do you have rules or exceptions for this? Some classics are tough and challenging in a great way, but what if we\u2019re reading for pleasure?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I hate to DNF, but I also hate to miss out on books I know could work for me because I\u2019m trying to get into the idea of a centaur buying jam. And after writing a very long response (<em>in very book nerdy fashion<\/em>\ud83e\udd13), I decided to write a post sharing my thoughts with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first, before we move on\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out<strong> my freebie printable.<\/strong> This is a peek into Lesson #4 from my online personal curriculum class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embracinghome.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/DNF-Printables.pdf\">free DNF PDFs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would classify myself as an avid reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I read between 70 &#8211; 130 books a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To decide if I will DNF a book, <strong>I think back to my original reason for reading it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Some of my reading reasons:<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are some books that I read for <strong>mental stimulation<\/strong>, <strong>emotional growth<\/strong>, or <strong>to stretch my capacity<\/strong>. These I try to stick with when they get uncomfortable or frustrating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other books are <strong>for entertainment<\/strong>, <strong>the feeling of a movie in my head<\/strong>, or to <strong>enjoy a character\u2019s development<\/strong>. I have no problem dropping a book like this and moving on to another I\u2019m more interested in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some books I choose to <strong>push myself out of my comfort zone<\/strong> (like genres I\u2019m not used to). If I\u2019m not into it because of the structure of the book then I will intentionally keep going a few more chapters. But if it is the content of the novel then I have no trouble letting it go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then there are other times when <strong>I want to know more about a specific subject or area of study<\/strong>. These are often textbooks that I skim or read specific chapters of. Especially if I had to return it to the library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark>\u201cI\u2019m having trouble connecting with it\u201d<\/mark> <\/strong>\u2014 movie adaptations are an option I turn to for a fiction book that I need more context for. There is no rule that you have to read the book before the movie.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This also works for non-fiction topics. I often browse for the specific topic + \u201cTed Talk\u201d on YouTube to get me started on basic knowledge of that area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark>\u201cOh no, this topic activates my HSP empath tendencies and triggers anxiety\u201d<\/mark><\/strong> \u2014 The story or topic feels too emotionally draining. For fiction and memoir I have a list of trigger warning type areas (like rape and 1st person combat) that I avoid portrayed in writing because I know reading\/listening to those scenes will 100% keep me up at night. \ud83e\udee4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark>\u201cThe pacing isn\u2019t right.\u201d<\/mark><\/strong> \u2014 The writing feels off, too slow, or I don\u2019t enjoy the narrator\u2019s voice (for audio). I have been spoiled by so many well read audiobooks that I don\u2019t have much patience for poor quality content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark>\u201cI morally disagree with this content\u201d<\/mark><\/strong> \u2014 sometimes there is a book that just doesn\u2019t work for me. No shame or judgement I just set it aside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark>\u201cThis non-fic book is more theoretical and not practical\u201d<\/mark><\/strong><mark> <\/mark>\u2014 I run into this often and it can feel like having an aggressive conversation when both parties agree. With a book like this I often skip ahead to the last few chapters hoping that they are more application and practical tips focused. (I felt that way with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anxiousgeneration.com\/book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Anxious Generation by Haidt<\/a> &#8211; great book, I just had to skim the first half.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark>\u201cI can\u2019t remember why I wanted to read this\u201d<\/mark><\/strong> \u2014 I picked it up out of obligation instead of interest.
