{"id":6470,"date":"2026-10-05T04:32:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T11:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embracinghome.blog\/?p=6470"},"modified":"2026-10-01T16:33:24","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T23:33:24","slug":"my-october-personal-curriculum-plans-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embracinghome.blog\/index.php\/2026\/10\/05\/my-october-personal-curriculum-plans-2\/","title":{"rendered":"My October Personal Curriculum Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">my TBR &amp; what I\u2019m making space for this month<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve noticed that I hold the term \u201cpersonal curriculum\u201d very loosely these days because of my schedule and life stage. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m a mid-life mom busy homeschooling my teens and finding ways to love and support my young adults. My schedule contains homemaking, teaching, parenting, volunteer work with teens, and writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My days are often full of invisible and unnoticed work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is why my monthly personal curriculum plans matter so much to me. I need a To-Do List that doesn\u2019t accomplish anything related to my caretaking tasks, but brings me immense joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have gotten some questions from readers about how I structure my learning and also this lovely pointed comment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>[[ <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s with the list of seasonal activities? That\u2019s not very academic..\u201d<\/em> ]]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, let me say that I love how a personal curriculum is first <strong><em>personal<\/em><\/strong> (meaning unique to each person)<strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, <strong><em>a personal curriculum can be structured in so many ways.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out my post on <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/embracinghome.substack.com\/p\/4-study-types-personal-curriculum?r=1qjcbv\">the 4 study types for more examples<\/a>. Right now I\u2019m definitely taking a relaxed approach. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I love making my monthly post because sharing my reading basket contents and intentional seasonal plans here feels like the gentle accountability of a library book due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>I want to avoid hypocrisy.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practical application is at the core of my writing. (I love finding new fall vibes playlists! I love the dialog and the Regency clothing and setting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83c\udfa5<strong>Sense and Sensibility<\/strong> (1995) &#8211; written by and starring Emma Thompson, alongside Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. Umm yes!! I realized that I haven\u2019t seen this one yet and I\u2019m excited.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83c\udfa5<strong>Emma<\/strong> &#8211; The 1996 movie with Gwyneth Paltrow is my favorite but I also liked the 2020 movie with Anya Taylor-Joy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83c\udfa5<strong>Mansfield Park<\/strong> (1999)\u2014 I enjoy this movie adaptation going beyond the original book by adding in elements of Austen&#8217;s actual life and personal journals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83c\udfa5<strong>Persuasion<\/strong> (1995 &amp; 2007) \u2014 The 2007 version is absolutely wonderful! I love that Dakota Johnson breaks the 4th wall and speaks directly to the camera.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83c\udfa5<strong>Pride &amp; Prejudice<\/strong> (2005) \u2014 Mr. Darcy in the fog. When I decided on my fall Austen theme I was so excited to find it waiting in my TBR stack. Yay!!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\udcda<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bethbrower.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion<\/strong> by Beth Brower<\/a> \u2014 This series takes place during the Late Victorian era and people on BookTok cannot stop talking about it. This book tackles the problems created with a society focused on instant gratification, temporary pleasures, and avoiding discomfort. Eckert defines joy vs. circumstantial happiness. And shares how joy is the fuel that enables young people to navigate adversity successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcd6<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bethpickens.com\/\"><strong><em>Make Your Art No Matter What: Moving Beyond Creative Hurdles<\/em><\/strong> by Beth Pickens<\/a> \u2014 I picked this book because she guides through common messy realities of the creative life with chapter titles like: Fear, Grief, Isolation, and the dread of Other People. I\u2019ve heard from others that Pickens completely busts the myth that you will one day reach a magical, stress-free paradise where your art will just flow. And this feels like just the book I need to read for my creative life right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcd6<a href=\"https:\/\/thenester.com\/house-hushing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>House Hushing: The Simple Method to Declutter and Decorate for a More Peaceful Home<\/em><\/strong> by Myquillyn Smith<\/a> (known online as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thenester.com\/house-hushing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nester<\/a>&#8220;) \u2014 This gorgeous book is a design and home organization guide that I\u2019m obsessed with. The photography is beautiful, and her examples are helpful and easy to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all the hosting that happened in my home this spring and summer, I need to reset my home for fall. This book is a kind companion for that process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m working on redefining some spots in the kitchen and living room. I got <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/a.co\/d\/0fTL90uT\">these soft lights<\/a> to hang above the front window so we can enjoy soft lighting on winter evenings. I like the &#8220;Choose Your Own Adventure&#8221; system and her back-to-basics cooking approach. It inspires me to be more creative and do more outside of my writing work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cEither write something worth reading, or do something worth writing.\u201d &#8211; Benjamin Franklin<\/em><\/strong><a id=\"footnote-anchor-1\" href=\"#footnote-1\">1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am also inspired by the ideas from Charlotte Mason about living a life permeated by being in nature, discussing good ideas, reading well-written words, and examining beautiful art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life is so much more than a list of adulting tasks, a cleaning To Do List, or even a stack of books we brag about reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cEducation is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.\u201d<br>\u2014 Charlotte Mason, A Philosophy of Education, Volume 6<\/em><\/strong><a id=\"footnote-anchor-2\" href=\"#footnote-2\">2<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is key to live a vibrant life full of ideas and experiences that give us material to have great conversations and healthy relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to be the best version of myself.
