restful productivity to live deliberately & avoid overwhelm

What is Restful Productivity?

a book excerpt and some insight into my favorite life hack

I am a ridiculously practical person. I enjoy reading stacks of productivity books and optimizing my schedule. But after I hit burnout I realized I was approaching things from an unrealistic perspective.

That was when I discovered that I could take two opposites and mash them together. Why not, right?

Hustle culture is never satisfied. There is always more to do. Even if I have 5 best days in a row the bar raises and now more is expected of me. That is not the kind of life I want to live.

My end goal is to be efficient and effective so that I have time and space for slowing down and actually enjoying the life that I have carefully built.

I use well tested productivity tools and tricks to get ahead in my homemaking, writing work, and homeschooling planning. Then I can enjoy the parts of those jobs that bring me joy. I can also enjoy rest and slowing down during my off times.

Restful productivity is the key for balance in my life.

Chapter 3 – restful productivity

In Chapter 2, we discussed what is broken in our culture and what needs to change. So, now it seems fitting to start off highly practical.

We all need less to do, more free time, and space in our schedules.

In this chapter, I will give you steps to make the most of your time and energy. I will walk you through being thoughtful in your choices.

It’s all about finding balance, not piling on more tasks.

What do the next 5 years look like? How old will you be? The time will pass no matter how you spend it. What if you invested your time in what matters to you? I believe that you can choose where you are headed.

You can choose your hard.[1]

I am wildly stubborn. I enjoy making my own path and subtly resisting our culture of hustle and stress. For years I tried to keep peace with the people pleaser inside of me. I’ve tried to meet the endless expectations and long checklists made by others.

Then I experienced several rounds of burnout.

There are so many times when I have felt overwhelmed, stressed out, and unsupported.

Life is hard. Not because we have done something wrong, but because it just is. There is so much to learn and understand in adulthood.

Huge changes can be made with small, simple decisions chosen over time.

Just the fact that you are holding this book [or reading this blog post😉] shows that you care about being intentional, and I am excited to walk with you on this journey.

Let’s explore some secrets I have unlocked around productivity.

I have discovered some helpful tips by reading stacks of books and using the ideas in my life and home. Many have failed, but a few specific things have kept me going.[2]

When life gets complicated it can help me to see what has worked for others. I am confident you can apply something here to your unique schedule. Keep what works for you and leave what doesn’t. No pressure, just consider this a toolbox to choose from.

footnotes:

[1] This is a phrase that I have found comfort it. Any life path we choose will have difficulty and frustration. Example: being single is hard, getting married is hard, staying married is even harder, getting divorced is hard, there is no easy path. In all areas relationships, lifestyles, careers, location, each decision has drawbacks.

[2] So basically, I am saving you years of frustration and experimentation. This is the book I desperately needed!

This book took shape slowly, in the margins of real life — your purchase is a generous way to cheer it into the world.
