Re-Runs & Real Life: My May Writing Break

graduations, a wedding, and making room for special family moments

I loved sitcom re-runs in the 90’s! 📺

In the off season writers, directors, actors, and all the people needed to make a TV show took time off.

The TV channel would play old favorites from the season and it was my chance to catch episodes that I missed or didn’t remember.

In our current fast paced and no rest culture, we can get sucked into the relentless pull of productivity.

It can feel like there’s no longer space or tolerance for re-runs. We fall into the trap of pushing ourselves no matter what season we are in.

I consider it a form of subtle resistance to do things differently.

Which is why I consistently take a Christmas break and I often schedule posts out if I have a busy few weeks ahead of me.

As many of you know, this spring is a big one for our family. Mary and her fiancé Elijah are graduating from college and then getting married in mid-May, and both of my college kids will be settling back in at home for the summer.

I’m about to enter into an incredibly busy season!

I am not carrying the weight of the wedding planning (Mary & Elijah are doing an awesome job with all that!). But being a support role for my adult kids (+ friends and now a son-in-law) is life-giving, amazing, and also consuming.

Being new at all this means it takes a lot of my focus and creative energy. As it should, because my family and household come first.💙

So, all of this to say, I will be taking a break till the end of May.

When I get quiet moments, I will be using my personal curriculum basket to help me feel connected to myself and rejuvenated. I will be focused on analog tools and handicrafts that slow me down. I will also let myself savor my book stack without an intense reading agenda. [check out my spring reading plans here]
